Tel Aviv was nothing more than a sand dune about a hundred years ago. Much later in 1910, this sand dune was converted into a new city that was established right next to the old city of Jaffa by David Ben Gurion along with many other Jews and named it as Ahuzat Bayit.
History of Tel Aviv
Jaffais perhaps the oldest city of Israel and was established by Japheth who was the son of Noah and brother of Sem and Hem.
Jaffa was initially used as a port by King Solomon for transporting Cedars of Lebanon to Israel for constructing its first temple. It was soon after the Roman Empire declined, that the Moslems and then later the European Crusaders reinvigoratedJaffa. The European Empire declined during the 19th century with the Turks overpowering them. Thereafter the city of Jaffa witnessed a dramatic increase in the overall population resulting into tremendous congestion in the city at the start of the twentieth century. After this the Jews residing in Jaffa took the decision of shifting to their own city right next to Jaffa. The name of the city Ahuzat Bayit was then changed to Tel Aviv, meaning the Hill Of Spring.
Tel Aviv was later declared as the capital of Israel in 1948. It was so named after David Ben Gurion announced the re-establishment of the independence of all Israeli on 5th May the same year. Tel Aviv’s total population during that period was about 200,000. The very next year Israel returned back to Jerusalem and so the City of David became the capital again.Later in 1950, Jaffa and Tel Aviv were merged into a single municipality.
